Not counting the one-time come-back pseudo documentary Pandora Peaks released in 2001, “Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” is the final movie by cult director Russ Meyer. Even though the end credits promises us “Jaws of the Vixen!” this would be his final entry into the world of cinematic movie making. What is funny is that in the closing scenes of the movie Meyer himself appears, talking directly to his audience and even though he doesn’t make any reference to quitting, it’s somewhat of a nice coincidence that he closes his own final movie.

“Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” takes places in Smalltown USA according to the on screen narrator played by Meyer veteran Stuart Lancaster. A small and quiet community in the country side of the US. Here a young man named Lamar (Ken Kerr) is so obsessed with the rear entry of women he can’t have regular sex, much to the dismay of his wife Levonna (Kitten Natividad). To fulfill her needs she has sex with several other men, like the garbage man and a door to door salesman. The latter provides her with a wig after which she becomes Lola Langusta, a topless dancer in a local go-go bar, in a short segment in the movie. Even though Lamar is rather faithful to his wife, he too has some extra-curricular sexual activities as he’s basically forced to have sex with his female employer, Junkyard Sal (June Mack).
June Mack, by the way, is something of a peculiar presence. This is the first and only time Meyer has cast a women that could actually be called plus-size. Mostly only displaying her breasts, its obvious Mack is quite a full figured woman. Not that I mind, but she does stand out when looking at the other women in this and previous movies by Meyer.
The central theme of “Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” is Levonna and Lamar repairing their marriage, or rather their sex life. But that’s just a simple excuse for 75 minutes of Kitten Natividad running around naked, as well as a few other women and men in a variety of scenes filled with humor.

Vibrators: setting unrealistic standards for men

“Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” is Meyer’s most explicit movie and the closest he has ever gotten to making hardcore pornography. The movie basically revolves around Kitten Natividad for the majority of the movie and her having sex with several people. Kitten is unsatiable and has sex with several men as well as the dentist’s female assistant in a gay themed scene that also features Lamar being sexually harassed by the dentist. These scenes are filled with close-ups of a rather large amount of pubic hair on her vagina, her breasts and butt. At certain points he even shows her actual vagina, lips and all. If there are any women watching this movie, they too get their treat as there were never this many penises, balls and butt shots this close on screen in a Meyer movie. One shot features a close-up of the tip of a penis with some pre-ejaculate on it. Not something that added something to the movie in my opinion, but it does show how Meyer was forced to push his own boundaries more and more due to hardcore pornography becoming wildly available.

Words can’t explain…

beneath-the-valley-of-the-ultra-vixens-screen-1While not as good as say Supervixens, “Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” is quite an entertaining movie even though it’s has a very incoherent story. At points the movie reminded me much of Meyer’s earliest work: the nudie cuties. Especially the constant narration by Lancaster gave me this idea, but the goofy segments in which especially Natividad bares all also were somewhat reminiscent of the The Immoral Mr. Teas and Wild Gals of the Naked West. The main difference being the amount of explicitness of the shots. Much has changed over the course of twenty years.

I don’t quite understand how Meyer got away with having both Kitten Natividad and Ushi Digard having on screen sex with a 14 year old boy even though he was played by a 27 year old actor. The final scene between him and Digard is especially awkward as it turns out as Digard is reprising her role as the Austrian Supersoul from Supervixens and Rhett turns out to be her step-son. Walking in on them is Lancaster who then appears to be also reprising his role from Supervixens as her husband and father of Rhett. He then tells his son to pull out his dick and let his father show you him its done. That is just wrong on so many levels. Did nobody ever bat an eye then?

A nice stepmother and son moment…

With 20+ movies under his belt, Meyer has a very distinctive style which is on display here as well. The movie is very colorful and the editing fast paced. Despite being almost 40 years old the movie never feels slowly paced, which is quite a feat considering the lack of an actual plot. There are a lot of people in the movie that have previously worked with Meyer on other features. He has also included shots of radios again, and it should come as no surprise that every woman in this movie has a rather large chest. Sadly the times were also changing in that department and multiple women on this movie have silicone breasts. beneath-the-valley-of-the-ultra-vixens-screen-5Even though they’re fake, Natividad’s look real, but local radio DJ Eufaula Roop (Ann Marie) has an enormous set of balloons that even a blind man can tell are fake from 20 yards away. A shame because Meyer was always good at finding and presenting us with nature’s special gift to men. Sadly there aren’t that many women given a decent amount of screen time. Most of it is taken up by Natividad with Marie coming in second. Women like Uschi Digard, Candy Samples and Sharon Ceccatti all have short cameos.

“Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens” is probably one of the more defining pictures of his career. Even though he broke through with nudie cuties, made roughies as well as studio movies he will mostly be remembered for making softcore pornography like Vixen!, Up!, Supervixens and this movie. But of all the pornographers he was probably the most talented, and in possession of a unique vision. Something which makes this movie to be much more able to stand the test of time than other softcore porn movies released at the same time.
