If you haven’t seen the female boxing drama Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney, you’re not alone. Hardly anyone showed up for it in theaters, and it bombed spectacularly. Which is a shame, because it’s actually pretty solid—better than its reputation suggests. I even enjoyed it. And as a bonus, there’s a moment where a pair of Nike Women’s AL8 sneakers gets a nice little spotlight.
The close-up of the shoe comes near the end of the film and feels very much like product placement. It adds nothing to the story beyond putting a pair of Nikes front and center. The scene is set in 2010, yet the model shown is a current release—conveniently dressed up with a ’90s aesthetic. So they really drop the ball here—a proper 2010-era model would have fit the scene, unlike this anachronistic eyesore.
Unlike other models I have spotted in popular media, this one isn’t particularly appealing. It has the look of something you’d find in more budget-friendly clothing stores rather than at Foot Locker or other higher-end retailers.
During the boxing matches, Christy appears to wear bright pink Nike boxing shoes, but they never get the same glossy treatment. But this does reinforce the suspicion that Nike cut a deal with the producers to spotlight their footwear.
