Destined to become a failure is what Green Lantern to be. A lesser known superhero with, well let’s be honest about it, a stupid name and some trailers that were not all that impressive. To salvage the impending doom WArner Brothers even released a 7 minute long preview to wet the appetite of the movie going public. Now month after its release it’s clear that it didn’t help much, while not the disaster it could have been it’s not the new Batman or Superman they were hoping for.
That said the movie was better than I expected it to be despite something as annoying as the Green Lantern’s costume made entirely out of CGI. Especially the mask on his face looks incredibly fake at points.
The story is about Hal Jordan, who saw his father die in a plane crash and decided that he should follow in his footsteps and become a test pilot himself. He’s reckless and obviously doesn’t care for his life until a magical ring takes him to the body of a dying alien who quickly informs him about the Lanterns being guardians en that the ring apparently chose him.
This being an origin story the first half is basically set up of Hal becoming the Green Lantern and so we’re treated to the obligatory training sequences and the exploration of the ring’s power before he has to do battle with no less than two enemies.
The Green Lantern is a by the numbers comic book movie adaptation. While made with a big enough budget to have some nice visuals it’s a bland movie that one is forgotten when watching the end credits roll. I was expecting a lot worse when the initial reviews came out and word of mouth wasn’t all that good but in the end it’s just a, sometimes goofy, movie that entertains but leaves no impression. In a year filled with comic book movies Green Lantern is probably the weakest of the bunch, but then again X-Men: First Class and Captain America: The First Avenger were both pretty damn good and even Thor had its moments. I can still quote Thor having seen it once months ago, I can’t even quote Lantern having it seen just recently.
